How To Conquer The Headache Of Understanding Guitar Chords For The Beginner
While there are no real magic formulas, there are a few useful strategies that you can use to learn beginner guitar chords, starting today.
Lets suppose that you have a chart of chords and that you have a comprehension of how to play the guitar, read a diagram and position your fingers on the fretboard and strings in the right way. Your next step would not be to attempt to learn every chord that is on the chart as soon as possible.
A better way would be to start out with only two to three easy to play guitar chords. These should ideally be belonging to the same key or family. A key is a group of interrelated chords or a "family" that musicians use when creating songs.
Many guitar instruction methods will start a novice out using the key of A. 3 chords from this family of chords are "A" "D" and "E".
With any of these three chords a learner should be able to play countless simple and easy guitar songs.
Take one chord at a time and master the finger placement. Starting with the "A". Practice keeping your fingers down on the chord and picking them up and reposition them again repeatedly. Do this for as long as is comfortable for you. Don't worry too much about strumming at this point. This is called developing "muscle memory".
Next try strumming. Strum all the strings that are supposed to be played for that chord. You might hear muted or buzzing sounds from the strings. If this is the case, continue to keep your fingers positioned on the appropriate strings and try playing each string independently, listening to hear that a decent sound is coming from each string. Experiment with rocking your finger back and forth on each string until finally you get a clean sound.
Now that you seem to be comfortable with your first chord = "A", try doing the very same thing for the subsequent one. Practice switching between chords in a similar way. Position your fingers for "A" and lift and replace your fingers for "D", and back to "A". Repeating this several times. Next you can add "E" to this mix. Start with the A, to the D to the E and continue to keep looping this pattern or progression.
Don't get frustrated if your not moving forward as rapidly as you expect. Gradually with time and practice you will be strumming and know how to switch between chords easily.
