Marijuana Medicine: Alternative therapeutic values of marijuana

from: Oze Parrot

In western society, marijuana is considered to be an illegal substance, although many people regularly smoke marijuana for recreational purposes, and expose themselves to prosecution by the authorities. On the other hand, there are people that take the substance for it's therapeutic qualities.

Marijuana is the psychoactive preparation that is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, and has been used by mankind since the neolithic period. It has been used as an intoxicant, a sacrament in religious ceremonies, a herbal medicine and, there are those that claim it as the tree of life. The active ingredient in marijuana is a chemical compound called delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol, which is most commonly referred to as THC. It is this ingredient, which gives marijuana it's intoxicating, relaxing and medicinal properties.

A proportion of people suffering from chronic illnesses, have found that marijuana is helpful to them because of it's soothing attributes. Researchers have produced a synthetic form of THC that has been designed to be used for medicinal purposes, and certain groups claim that it is a perfect alternative therapy for victims of cancer and AIDS. The taking of THC wards of bouts of depression, gives the patient a feeling of wellbeing and helps to prevent attacks of nausea. The analgesic qualities of marijuana also provides the patient with relief from the pain of migraine, menstrual cramps and backache. Certain neurological conditions respond favorably to medical marijuana, and it can also prevent arterial blockages. Researchers, are of the opinion that medicinal marijuana can possibly prevent Alzheimer's disease. Already, marijuana treatment has been proven to restore the appetites of elderly sufferers of the disease.

Studies have shown that the use of marijuana, reduces involuntary muscle spasms experienced by sufferers of multiple sclerosis, and is a beneficial treatment for epilepsy. Marijuana produces a feeling of wellbeing, relaxes the body and soothes the nervous system. These qualities make it an ideal herbal therapy for sufferers of chronic diseases, the symptoms of which, include continuous pain, insomnia and depression.

Lengthy studies have been conducted on glaucoma sufferers, and the effects of marijuana treatment. The ingestion of THC has an affect on the flow of blood to the eyes, and recreational pot smokers always have some visine handy, to get the red out. Glaucoma is a condition that increases blood pressure within the eyeballs, which causes the patients vision to deteriorate. Marijuana therapy, effectively reduces the blood pressure within the eyes, easing the condition. This treatment to date is not a permanent solution, as the dosage of THC has to be periodically increased, in order to stabilize the pressure in the eyes. The increased intake of THC can restrict the natural flow of blood to the optic nerve, which can cause other problems.

When a person is confronted with the knowledge that he is suffering from a chronic, degenerative or fatal disease, then it would seem that any herbal therapy that provided an avenue of remission could be used, whether it was legal or not.
